When selecting perennials, keep in mind that bloom times differ. To have season-long colour in the perennial garden it is important to choose a variety of spring blooming plants, summer blooming plants, and fall blooming plants. There are a few varieties that will give long blooming periods throughout the whole season, but choices are limited.
Perennial Care Tips
Container-grown perennials can be planted at any time of the season, after the frost has melted, until 2 or 3 weeks before freezing. Bulbs should be planted in the spring or the fall only, depending on the type of plant.
Perennials for Sun and Shade
As with any plant, light tolerance is different between plants. Some can withstand full sun and others cannot. Some are even fine in either, but it will affect their appearance and growth habit.
